Vanguard Detectable Warnings (Truncated Domes) Truncated domes are a uniform standard that have been chosen by the federal government over all others as the only approved surface texture allowed under specified criteria such that "continuity" of design for the visually impaired is maintained. As per ADAAG guidelines, these are to be placed around,

hazardous vehicular ways
access ramps
transit platform edges
where predetermined edge protection is required.

GuideStrip
GuideStrip is the latest addition to the VANGUARD line. While the grooves are a little difficult to see in such a small image (right), the quarter ($.25) indicates both the location and depth of same. GuideStrip is a unique tactile guidance system that uses the grooved/cane directional system for individuals to track safely to an emergency exit, at crosswalk edges, transit platform door openings (to indicate both, door location, as well as appropriate path of travel), or anywhere else directional or emergency cues are required. GuideStrip provides functional, directional, as well as intuitive cues, and GuideStrip fits all training methods currently used. Whether by following the groove with a cane ("tracking"), or going back and forth with same ("washboard"), GuideStrip is the most effective means of providing a safe and efficient method for directional cues.
